Public Reaction to Arthur Harris
In the "History of Bombing," Sven Lindqvist describes the effects of the bombings in German residential cities. He mentions the dead bodies that are stuck to the ground by their melted fat and how the burnt infants resembled grilled chickens. This gruesome description paints a much different picture of bombings compared to what I'm personally used to seeing in mainstream media. The way bombings are portrayed by movies and television has desensitized the general public. Many people just do not care about what kind of collateral damage area bombings can do. This parallels Arthur Harris' bombing policies of targeting primarily residential areas and the public reaction to his actions. Harris is treated as a hero these days and even has his own statue that was unveiled by the Queen of England, but if more people knew the effects of the bombings, even if they did happen to our "enemies," I believe that Harris would be viewed as a much different kind of person.
