Oblivious Americans
Todays modernism has had profound effects on society and the ideology of peoples. Multiple readings for this class have touched up on the subject. The most of which I am interested is "The Age of the World Target" by Rey Chow. It gives great examples of how technology gives "power." A sentence worth quoting: "To conceive of the world as a target is to conceive of it as an object to be destroyed" (p.31). I think about this and wonder where the targets of our enemies are. New York, maybe, Los Angeles, possibly. These famous cities depend on technology like many others, but for some reason I feel as if the United States, as a whole, is ignorant about our technology. As we go about our daily lives on facebook and twitter, do most people stop and think about what our technology is doing to others. Our warfare in several countries, killing thousands, yet we are oblivious to how much is being destroyed because we do not receive the combative interactions on our land. Yes we can watch youtube and watch the news but those are the sugar covered versions. What is released is the bare minimum, I believe, of what is actually happening. As shown in class, the gunman video is a perfect example. The only reason we saw this video is because it was leaked to the public. In my opinion, yes it was sad, but I know there is much worse that the military has done illegally. The nuclear bombs may have been a legal action, according to the approvals of such American hierarchy, but if bombing surrenders and our own Americans is considered effectively winning a war, then there must be confusion from winning and terrorism.
