Since we are assigned to watch the original Godzilla or ゴジラ film, what better topic than to cover the newest version coming to theaters this month. I have attached a trailer, and while I was watching it, I couldn't help but feel disappointed. First off, one has huge expectations when Bryan Cranston plays the main American protagonist (because of his emmy award winning and bad-ass acting in Breaking Bad), but when watching the trailer, there is much to be desired. Cranston's acting seems overly animated and it seems like it's worse than the Japanese original, despite the immense amount of resources and technology used to resurrect a black and white film into color, 3D and abundant with CGI. In the trailer I picked out one of the lines from Bryan Cranston's narrative: "You're hiding something out there, and it will send us back to the stone age!" This caught my attention right away, because he was referring to Godzilla, but we all know that this symbolizes nuclear weapons. There were many other scenes that showed scenes of a mushroom cloud forming, a nuclear missile ready to be launched, mass destruction and even the Statue of Liberty in shambles. I find it interesting that Godzilla is in America instead of Japan, it seems like Godzilla is getting revenge. Also, I find this portrayal of Godzilla pertaining to the topic of American Subjectivity which is often phrased as "What happened there, could happen here." Do you think it is right to use Godzilla and portray him as a Japanese monster that is destroying America?
On another note that is very interesting, the trailer I provided above has about 25 million views. That is so crazy. On IMDB it already has 4.5/5 stars and I am starting to wonder if people see what I'm seeing. Your thoughts and responses are much appreciated! :)
