The exploitation of the Navajo people
by the United States to attain uranium necessary to fund weapon
development needs is a way that the United States conducts its dirty
business. Throughout the United State's campaign to propel the
Manhattan Project forward, confidential information denied many
people who took part in the project, directly and indirectly, the
knowledge to make rational choices concerning their immediate and
future health. It is sickening to know the US' capability of such
atrocity.
The Navajo people, who agreed to help
mine minerals from within their own land for the United State's
needs, were not informed of the hazard that the mined minerals,
uranium, would contain high levels of life-threatening radiation. The
country's methods of acquiring what it wants is a cycle that simply
exploits until it can't be done anymore. This can be seen throughout
history where a number of people, ranging from different classes to
race, are dehumanized in ways that sets these people as exempt from
the care that the rest of the population reaps. It is a cycle of
destruction and healing, where past exploits are placed 'under the
rug' and we as a country attempt to change regressive ways, only
waiting for another regressive act to happen.
I couldn't agree more, Christian. Upon taking this class on the Nuclear Pacific, I was completely blind-sided by the numerous cases of exploitation that the United States commits on the Navajo people. It is quite sickening to see the ways in which our country benefits from its native people for government, military, and economic gain. Where is the humanity in this never-ending cycle? Where does it end?
